Metal Roofing Systems

Unsurprisingly, metal roofing systems are known for their strength and longevity. In fact, there are few systems available regardless of price that beat a metal system in these areas. When you factor in their lifespan of 50+ years, metal is a cost-effective option for many types of commercial or industrial facilities, as well as homes and even multi-family buildings.

When one thinks of metal roofing, a vision tends to come to mind of corrugated tin roofing on an industrial complex.  Though that is one form, it is far from the only type of metal roofing system to consider.

Metal Roofing Options

Today’s metal roofing systems come in a plethora of styles, colors and even materials. A few of the more popular are discussed.

Metal Sheets. The metal sheet is probably the most common of metal roofing options. Frequently composed of aluminum or light-gauge steel, metal sheets are laid across the substructure, then fastened into place with mechanical fasteners.

Standing Seam. Though this roofing system is also composed of metal sheets, the standing seam system differs in that the sheets are attached to the substrate in what is called a “concealed fastener metal roofing panel”. The bottom line is there are no screw holes in the panels. Instead, they are attached via a system of clips and fasteners. This eliminates the potential for leak development at the screw sites.

Tiles – Many people love the look of tile but prefer the durability of metal. Now, they can have both! Metal tiles are installed like other tile, but can be stamped with patterns, infused with colors or made to mimic other roofing styles, such as slate, clay or even wood.

Benefits of Metal Roofing Systems

Though admittedly more expensive initially, metal roofing systems offer significant benefits that more than offset the initial additional outlay.

Longevity. Metal roofing, when properly maintained, can easily last 50 years or longer. That is a long time between replacement costs!

Strength. Metal is well-known for its strength and durability. It stands up well in most adverse weather conditions, while continuing to look fantastic.

Versatility. Metal roofing comes in many colors, styles, and options. For the discriminating owner, this versatility allows for freedom of expression, without sacrificing quality.

Restorable. We all know one of the drawbacks to metal is the tendency toward rust. There is now technology on the market that allows for rust to be inhibited, waterproofing enhanced and even energy efficiency improved, with the use of a metal roof restoration service.

Recyclable. Many new metal roof installations now involve the use of recycled materials. Even if yours isn’t one, you can bet that when that metal roof is replaced, the materials involved are 100% recyclable. That reduces material in our landfills, and it is much better for our environment.
